Christmas is a special time for family and friends. But for children it is absolutely magical. And that is really why we go to so much trouble to decorate at Christmas time. The tinsel and lights and baubles: to children it is an enchanting fantasy world. What every parent wants to do at Christmas is see their children's eyes light up with wonder.

However, children being children and parents being parents it is the parents who have to plan the Christmas, and then pay for it. And one of the nightmares of Christmas is the tree. Getting the children to help decorate the tree to build the excitement, and making it the decorative feature of the room is an important part of Christmas. But real trees have real problems. For a start they are expensive.

They shed needles all over the carpet and they have to be disposed of. There is a thriving industry now in getting rid of unwanted Christmas trees in January. The answer is cheap artificial Christmas trees. They come in all sorts of colours, from the traditional green to wintry white and even red. They tend to be more slim than real trees, and you can get small ones if you do not have a lot of space. But they do not have to be small. They are made in sizes up to 6ft and 7ft. And the real beauty is that after Christmas they can go in the loft or the garage, ready for next year, when you can make your children's eyes light up all over again.
