A bathroom typically needs to accommodate a variety of essential items, such as toiletries, towels, etc. and, granted that the sink top and/or window sill is generally the only surface available, bathroom storage often requires a degree of creativity. If you’re fortunate enough to have a double sink in your bathroom, you may have room to fit a cheap bathroom storage unit on the sink top between the sinks. Failing that, you may have room to fit a cabinet, known as a vanity, under the sink.

If you don’t have room for a cabinet above or below the bathroom sink, you’ll need to rely on the available floor and wall space to meet your storage needs. A freestanding storage unit, with closed drawers for toiletries and open baskets, or shelves, for towels is one solution, while one or more open, wall-mounted shelves is another. A closed, freestanding cabinet can provide a convenient way of keeping essentials, such as toilet rolls, out of sight, but within easy reach when required.

Bathroom cabinets may be constructed from solid wood or wood coated with veneer, or vinyl, and sealed with polyurethane varnish or wax, or left unsealed. In most cases, wiping them down with a damp cloth and polishing them with regular furniture polish is sufficient to prevent the build up of dust, which can be exacerbated by aerosol products, such as deodorant and hairspray. Similarly, clean up spillages as soon as they occur and watch out for condensation pooling on bathroom cabinet surfaces.
