  • The HOW TO not get stuck in the mud this Festival Season

    MUSIC FESTIVAL - ˈfɛstɪv(ə)l/

    noun

    plural noun: music festivals

    1. An organised series of live music, avant-garde dance moves and dwindling standards of hygiene, typically held in one place annually
    2. A day or period of celebration where most social norms are abandoned, muddiness is a staple fashion statement and being drenched becomes the threat that umbrellas the entire event.

    Bridget Jones Festival

Whether you’re a seasoned festival goer or it’s your first time in the 'strawberry fields', most people have seen the years of media coverage in Glastonbury capturing thousands of sodden and grotty music fans squelching about and becoming engulfed in relentless barrages of torrential rain.

But don’t ‘Freak Out’ — stay Chic!

    shutterstock_298767080

Get stocked up with these inexpensive essentials so you can successfully 'eat, sleep, rave, repeat' like Fatboy for the duration and leave the event feeling 'the best, the best, the best of you'....

Camping Tools: From ditches to Duchess

    shutterstock_257146174

Obviously most people remember to bring a tent as standard  but, when it comes to camping, especially at a festival, there are so many added extras that you can pick up for next to nothing at Poundstretcher which will make bracing the 'great' outdoors infinitely more comfortable!

    1. Don't get stuck in the 'mud'dle...shutterstock_424777246

When you're having a fabulous time watching the Sunset with Ed Sheeran, the last thing you think you'll care about is grass stains or a damp bum!

    shutterstock_331484618

But, later, when you're shivering from laying in what was effectively a bog in your bare legs, you'll probably not care about that 'Castle on the Hill'.

You will, however, probably wish you'd brought a waterproof picnic blanket along to keep you and your friends comfy and dry throughout the whole concert!279486-picnic travel rug_yellow_1000x1000

At £3.99 they’re cheap, bright and practical - perfect for chilling out on, come rain or shine!

Or if you're really going to pull out all the stops, pick up a folding camping chair!

    1000x1000 289360 - GREEN FOLDAWAY CHAIR

You might get some stick from your more ‘free-spirited’ mates who reckon 'you should be dancing' all weekend but, with a built-in drinks holder and in four different colours, you’ll definitely have the last laugh!

Especially when you’re perched on the only thing separating you from the mud that’s claimed the lives of most of your mates’ wellies.

    shutterstock_294538256

Plus, it comes with an easy carry bag to fold it back into so you can always guarantee somewhere comfy to sit!

    shutterstock_259018820

    2. Don't let mealtimes become a Tragedy...

Whilst most people spend the festival walking around looking for their sanity, you may find you fancy something to nibble at some point.

    _YPS0378

Plastic kitchen ware is a great camping idea. Cups (for that much-needed Coffee in the morning), disposable cutlery and plates. After all, you'll need somewhere to put those sausages you burnt on the disposable BBQ

    Picnic-Sets-Both-web

HEALTH TOOLS: REMEMBER, Your body is a TEMPLE, NOT A BIN BAG.

Despite spending 361 days of the year acting moderately normal with three meals a day and ‘a couple’ in the pub on a Friday after work, some people get that caught up in the hippy vibe of a festival, they end up forgetting how to look after themselves within the realms of what’s socially acceptable.

    shutterstock_509370406

Let’s be honest-- festivals are both physically and mentally strenuous, and can only be completed successfully by savvy people. Please note: these are NOT the people who say things like ‘water’s for the weak’ or insist on relating everything back to their ‘gap year’.

So, here’s a list of things you might not have thought of taking but you will definitely need when 'stayin' alive'  at a festival and avoid coming out when it’s home time looking like you’ve just escaped the set of Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ video...

    FMCG FESTIVAL

And finally, make sure you’re not the one needing somebody to 'lean on' at Major Lazer and 'reload' with some Red Bull!

So, there you have it—the list of handy festival essentials at bargain prices! And it doesn't stop there! We have a massive selection of choccies, crisps and nibbles on offer so 'don't you forget about' Poundstretcher and make a pit-stop before you head off to Just Dance!FESTIVAL NIBBLES UPDATED

  • ‘Thank You, Teacher!’ – The Gifts They Want!

Say 'thank you' with these great gift ideas

It’s July, and you know what that means? No, I don’t mean Wimbledon; I’m talking about the end of the academic year!

Soon kids will be flooding the streets, making the most out of a summer that’s claimed to be scorching, whilst some will be jetting away for holidays to explore new lands and gain new experiences. However, before that happens there’s still the little matter of the last couple of weeks before school actually ends.
    School's out for summer, baby!

And so, you may be thinking about buying a little something-something to say 'thank you' to that teacher who has worked so hard throughout the year, put in loads of effort, and has truly made a difference?

Appreciation for teachers, the ones shaping today’s youth into the future working citizens of this country, is one of those end-of-year traditions that, no matter the age group they teach, ends the year on a high note.

Due to their caring nature, teachers love any present; it’s true. However, there are gifts that can go the extra mile, and it doesn't have to break your budget and can still come straight from the heart. After all, the last thing you want to give them is something they already have a lot of, and, as a consequence, they won’t even use it!

So, here are a few versatile gift ideas if you’re still scratching your head over what to get. They’re all useful, they’re all affordable, and they’re all here at Poundstretcher!

C is for ‘Chocolate’, L is for ‘Lots of it’!

Lots of chocolate to say 'thank you'

Shall we start with the tastiest and most obvious choice? Chocolate! Sweet, sweet chocolate! Why not just end the year with a touch of sweetness and stick to this safe and delicious option? You’d only find a very small handful of people out there who don’t love such a treat; there’s just so much choice when it comes to the sugary stuff.

If you’re hunting for something simple and classic, then nothing can trump the crispy aspect of Maltesers or the variety of Quality Street. However, if you’re looking for something that looks a little more special, then we at Poundstretcher have you covered with our Cadbury Milk Tray, a small selection of flavoured Cadbury milk chocolate.
Say 'thank you' and enjoy the delicious maltesers with their crispy taste

There’s plenty more where that came from too. We stock a wide range of chocolates, from bars to pouches to eggs (cream eggs to be exact). They all make the perfect snack to feast on in those last few days of after-school marking before that nice, long, well-deserved summer break.

    SATS (Scents A Teacher Smells)

If chocolate is a no-go, then why not give that special teacher in your life a dash of aromatherapy? No, I don’t mean some fancy spa treatment. Something as simple as a reed diffuser or a candle is more than enough to fill their living space with a fragrance that’ll relax them after a long day.

Inject some vigour into their home, especially during those long summer days, with some reed diffusers. Coming in lavender, sweet pea, fresh cotton, and French vanilla scents, there’s enough to pick from and a range spanning fresh scents to those sweet-smelling ones.

Why not say 'thank you' to those teachers with a set of these?

Also, if reed diffusers aren’t hip enough, then you can always get them a candle IN a Mason jar. Stylish, right? These mini Mason jar candles come in a range of mouth-watering fragrances: cherry, coconut, mulberry, and even marshmallow! The handle makes for easy moving around the home, and the quirky style will fit comfortably in any room. No matter where they go, a relaxing scent can always be there for when they just want to chill.

However, whilst smelly things are a great gift idea, tread lightly; think long and hard about what fragrance you think the teacher would like, or ask them directly (or be sneaky and have your child ask). Like perfumes and aftershaves, there are many scents out there, and not everyone likes everything.

    Decorating Desks

Alliteration is great, isn’t it? We learnt it gives colour and a sticking-power in our writing. That’s exactly what these next few ideas will do to your teacher’s desk, be it in the classroom or at home. So, after the edible stuff and the smelly things, here’s some purely aesthetic, handy little things teachers will love.

Get your teacher's desk looking fantastic with these 'thank you' gifts

There's one thing that a teacher always needs more of (aside from time), and that's storage. With the mass amount of pens, pencils, toys, books, papers, and inky stamps, there has to be a place to put them all. That's where these practical storage boxes come in!

Regardless if the teacher in question would prefer pretty butterfliesflowers, or bold geometric shapes, why not allow them to have their things kept safe in a neat and organised way?

And to top it off? Why not utilise the power of the sun itself with this adorable Solar Flower Buddy (also makes for a useful teaching aid)? Watch it dance side-to-side as it soaks up the sun's rays!

    Art & Design Time

Nothing says 'thank you' quite like some creatively designed gifts like these

If you’d rather go the extra mile and instead get your creative juices flowing, then why not think about using a Mason jar and turn it into a fantastic homemade gift? How, you may ask? Simple, take some of our delicious sweets (such as our Maltesers, Skittles, or Squashies) and stuff them inside, creating a more personalised gift than simply handing a standard bag over.

Don’t want to go in the sweets direction? Then you could always fill it with handwritten messages of praise and admiration. Once the jar is empty, it can then serve another purpose: being a quirky pencil pot to keep on their desk, or to simply keep at home for all their marking stationery.

Do (Not) Let Me Repeat Myself

The last idea is a keeper; chocolate – wait, did this already get mentioned? It did? Well, can you blame us for wanting to mention it twice? It really is the staple to give your beloved teacher something edible to munch on when they finally get to put their feet up for the summer.

Say 'thank you' to your teachers with Poundstretcher

All in all, no matter what you decide on to say 'thank you', make sure to give the gift search a big A for Effort! Head on down to your local Poundstretcher and find that perfect bargain gift today (remember: only a couple of weeks left)!

  • The HOW TO guide: doing Father's Day on a budget!

shutterstock_428112886 It’s that time of year again to celebrate that legendary man whose life teachings became fundamental pillar blocks to your general success as a human being!

The Man who introduced you to The Matrix. The Man whose years of nagging carved you into a professional ‘light-switcher-off’er. The Man who, in the face of blackened skies and torrential rain, would stand by his decision for a family camping trip, insisting that, surely, it’ll ‘brighten up soon’... Yes, it's that time of the year to celebrate the man we all call: 'Dad'.

    The Legend The Legend

Whilst on Mother’s day a bouquet of daffodils and a card usually suffices, father’s can be slightly trickier creatures to get right in the present department, especially when you’re on a budget! So instead of trudging around shops searching for the flashiest gadget or electronic device to set you back a month’s rent, why not go for something a little less excessive and a little more personal?

Give your Dad something more personal this Father's Day Giving your Dad something more personal this Father's Day could be just the trick!

Here’s a couple of ideas HOW TO show your Dad just how much you appreciate him telling you off all those times he caught you opening various objects with your teeth, whilst also being savvy with your pennies!

Wake him up with a feast!

According to reliable sources like all reputable cereal companies or anyone’s mum, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And, for the majority of the general public, Sunday morning lie-ins are at a superior enjoyment level to most other activities and should be engaged in whenever possible. So, for your dad this year, why not get up an hour earlier, peel your eyes away from your pillows or Xbox screen and make him Breakfast in Bed!

A Breakfast Banquet A Breakfast Banquet

But before you panic that your cooking skills are less than acceptable, remember— your dad is not Gordon Ramsey. He is not going to start bashing his fist on the lap tray if the croissants you might have forgotten about in the oven are a little crispier than humanly edible...

To save disappointment on both parties, however, why not make life easy for yourself?

Pancake Stack with juicy berries and a generous dusting of achievement! Pancake Stack with juicy berries and a generous dusting of achievement!

Pancakes are a guaranteed crowd pleaser, so make sure you get a non stick frying pan to flip them about the place easily until perfectly cooked. Or until they end up on the floor…

And if you want to create something a little more fancy, why not get yourself an egg poacher and go with a show-stopping ‘Eggs Benedict’?

    Eggs Benedict Eggs Benedict

Whether he’s a Full English kind of bloke, welcoming any amounts of fried extras, or he’s the sort of man who drenches his muesli in hot water, at Poundstretcher, we’ve got a huge range of kitchen products—from muffin trays to mini frying pans, so you can give your Dad an impressive breakfast he hasn’t had to make himself for less!

The Mighty Full English The Mighty Full English

Go on— push the TOAST out!

Get him off the sofa and into a deck chair!

The next job on the agenda is to make sure that, under no circumstances, must your dad get involved in his usual weekend jobs this Sunday. No mowing the lawn. No fiddling with the boiler. And absolutely nothing involving him climbing under the family Volvo in his 17 year old, oil-stained Ferrari T-Shirt and a screwdriver…

Father and Son in the sun Father and Son in the sun

Father’s Day is about him relaxing and enjoying himself so, after his ‘world-class’ breakfast, why not get a little picnic together, round up the family and head down to the local park or beach and catch some rays?

Kit yourself out with a picnic blanket, outdoor plates, party drinks bottles, sharing bowls filled with crisps, homemade salad or nuts. And don’t forget a cool box to keep your drinks cool and your sandwiches intact!shutterstock_444547879

If you’re less about the ‘planning and prep’ side of eating al fresco, why not pick up a couple of disposable BBQs and a bag of assorted meat and veg to get on the grill? The important thing is to get your dad in a comfy chair under the sun with something to keep him occupied, like a Paper or a beer. Then you could probably feed him just about anything!

Obviously, it’s important not to forget the naughty nibbles for afters! Since here at Poundstretcher we always have an endless supply of amazing confectionary deals— like boxes of 120g Maltesers and bags of Mars Mini-bites for just £1— you can satisfy, not only your dad’s sweet-tooth, but the rest of your family’s as well!

    Family Fun Family Fun

So, take a break from the tele and make sure you get your family out this Father’s Day!

And a few added extras, because everyone loves a surprise!

Obviously if you fancy getting him a few little treats— some Father’s day stocking fillers— then we have some amazing deals on gifts for him too! With our range of Umbro 100ml Eau de Toilette only £1.49, the brand new collection of our Classic and Cavailia branded boxer shorts and the amazing deals on summer socks, you can still surprise him with a few goodies without breaking your budget!

So, whatever your budget, make sure your Dad feels like a King this Father's Day! Because, let's be honest, that's exactly what he is!shutterstock_395530639

You’ve probably got lots of fun and exciting Summer holiday activities planned so you’re bound to be doing a lot of travelling across the UK during the next 6 weeks.

And we all know what that means.

The familiar sounds of ‘are we there yet’ from the back seats, endless queuing, and of course the inevitable expensive snacks.

We’ve all been there: you head off to a fair ground or a wildlife park to have a cracking time with the family and suddenly you’re broke for the Summer because a few hot dogs have made you dip in to your overdraft.

We’re all about saving those pennies and pounds – after all it’s why we’re called Poundstretcher!

So we thought we’d give you some simple snacks that won’t cost you more than your day out itself!

Chances are you’re going to be leaving at stupid o’clock in the morning which means you have to wake up the mini ones and make sure they’re ready on time. You’re going to need a lot of snacks and tons of coffee. Not just any coffee though, you need a sumptuously rich nectar of the gods that will make your soul thank the heavens for those finely ground little beans. • Simple Overnight Oats: Summer’s Coolest Breakfast

Simple Overnight Oats: Summer’s Coolest Breakfast

So the kids are preparing for the Summer holidays while you’re stuck in a rut for the final fortnight.

When you’re trying to get the little ones ready for school, it’s easy to forget about something as important as breakfast.

After all, it’s going to be a hectic 6 weeks trying to juggle work and child care so you're already stressing about it all.

You need something quick, healthy, hearty, and cheap.

Sounds too good to be true?

    Wrong.

Welcome to the wonderful world of overnight oats.

3 Mason jars with yummr overnight oats recipes including banana, strawberry, and peanut butter

Overnight oats have been taking the internet by storm and unlike traditional porridge that you need to stir on the stove for a good 20 minutes, the prep time for overnight oats is 10 minutes or less before you go to bed.

Kids will also absolutely adore this healthy breakfast treat and they’ll love all the random colours you can make with this dish.

However this grab-and-go breakfast on a budget is sure to help busy mums and dads like you to get your 5-a-day, calcium, and to stay energised until lunch time.

Sometimes they’re called Summer oats because in the warmer seasons this brekkie can keep you cool.

If the weather turns typically British with the cold and rain, you can just pop them in the microwave for a minute and a half for a hot comforting meal.

    All you need is:

    • Porridge oats (of course)
    • An air tight container like a Mason jar
    • Toppings
    • Milk, yogurt, water or a dairy alternative of your choice

We’d recommend using a measuring jug to roughly measure out 200ml of your liquid and 35g of your oats but to be honest you can be flexible with how much you put in.

The best part is that you can tweak the recipe to suit your tastes.

Not sure what toppings you want? Here’s some of our favourite overnight oats recipes:

    1. The Cinnamon Staple

A woman holding a spoonful of overnight oats

    Ingredients:

    • Desiccated coconut flakes
    • 200ml of milk or a dairy alternative of your choice
    • 35g or more of oats
    • 1tsp cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp of sugar
    • Chopped banana

A sweet breakfast that will fast become a staple in the kitchen, you’ll get a bit of your 5-a-day with the banana but can also treat yourself to a bit of sugar with that half tea spoon.  This recipe is so easy, even the mini ones can do it to help you out in the kitchen! Put all of your ingredients in the jar in no particular order – leave the banana out though! Put the lid on the Mason jar, shake it like a Polaroid picture, and leave overnight. When you wake up in the morning, give your oats a stir, chop a banana and add to the top.

    1. The Fruity Fresh One

A Mason jar with yogurt, blueberries, and oats

    Ingredients:

    • Yoghurt
    • Oats
    • Blueberries
    • Raspberries
    • Strawberries
    • Milk
    • ½ tsp sugar

This one needs a bit of layering so it can look pretty! Layer your yogurt and oats one after the other, occasionally add chopped fruit to the yogurt layer. Mix and match your flavours but always remember to leave enough for your top layer to decorate it. Put the lid on and shake your Mason jar like you’re holding maracas, put it in the fridge, and leave it overnight. Add your fruit to the top in the morning!

    1. The Pecan Pie Porridge

A Mason jar with pecans, bananas, and overnight oats

    Ingredients:

    • 1tbsp peanut butter
    • 1 tsp maple syrup
    • A handful of pecans
    • 1 mashed banana
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • Optional: A splash of milk or dairy alternative of your choice

Is it a dessert or is it a breakfast? For everyone who has always wanted to eat cake for breakfast (hopefully not just us), this is a healthy overnight oats recipe that tastes like you’re indulging in a cheeky pudding. First you need to mash your banana up in a bowl – the spottier that nana is the better because that means it’s super sweet and ripe. Then add all of your other ingredients apart from the pecans to the mix and go stir crazy! Make sure that peanut butter is even, it’s easy to miss a spot in your jar. Shake your Mason jar like your busting out a Gangnam Style move, put it in the fridge, and leave it overnight. If you want your brekkie to be creamier, add a splash of milk to taste then stir before you leave it in the fridge. Remember the oats will swell and soak all of this mixture up so your Summer oats will be thicker in the morning after you’ve left them out, so don’t add too much milk because it’ll end up like a milkshake! In the morning, sprinkle some pecans on top, dig in, and enjoy!

  • 4 Simple Ice Lolly Recipes

    4 Simple Ice Lolly Recipes

Summer is finally here and in typical British fashion our weather is all over the place!

One minute we’re reaching for our hoodies because it’s pouring with rain and the next we’re melting like ice lollies at Poundstretcher HQ!

So to keep you cool when it’s hot and the kids occupied when it’s cold, we thought we’d share our fave ice lolly recipes that are simple, sweet, and sure to get you in the Summer spirit!

    The Fruit Fancy

Three fruit ice lollies with strawberries, kiwis, blackberries, blueberries and ice

What you need to make your ice lollies:

Any sweet fruits of your choice like pineapple, oranges, bananas, berries etc
    Lemonade
    Half a cup of water
    Lolly moulds with sticks

For a good mix of sweet and sour flavours, ‘The Fruit Fancy’ is the perfect pop for you because each lolly can be customised to suit your fancy (of course)! Get your paws on plenty of fruit that is sugary enough to keep up your energy, refreshing to keep you hydrated, and most importantly tasty! Mix half a cup of water with your lemonade. Get some fresh fruit from the market or one of our Dole Tropical Mix Tins ready for your lolly mix. Chop up your fruit in to small pieces that will fit in to your lolly moulds and think about what flavours complement each other. Are you in the mood for a blast of berries like raspberry, strawberry, and blueberry or are you feeling fruity enough for a tropical mix with pineapple and banana? When you’ve sorted what fruits you’re using, add them to the mould and pour in that lemonade/water combo faster than Beyonce can drop a surprise album. Put the moulds in the freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour then place the lolly sticks inside your mould. Do not remove until they are frozen solid!

    Coca-Cola Popsicles

Coca - Cola cans and soda in two glasses

What you need to make your ice lollies:

    Coca – Cola (of course)
    Lolly moulds with sticks
    Optional lemons and/or limes

If you’re the ultimate sloth who likes to sit and chill out, this is the recipe for you. Coca-Cola pops are by far the easiest ice lolly recipe ever. All you need is the cola of your choice – it could be Cherry Coke, Coca Cola Vanilla, Diet Coke etc – and your lolly moulds. Pour in the coke, add your lolly stick, and then freeze until frozen solid. Voila, the easiest frosty treat in the world to make. Try adding a bit of spice with a few lemons and limes in the mix for an extra kick to your lolly. It may not be the healthiest of these treats but damn, it tastes good.

    Strawberry Milkshake Pops

Pink ice lolly mix freshly poured in lolly moulds

What you need to make your ice lollies:

    Strawberries
200-300ml of milk or a dairy alternative of your choice (we recommend coconut milk for dairy free readers)
    Lolly moulds with sticks
    Optional raspberries
    A measuring jug

Strawberry and raspberry ice lollies with fruit

Prepare to sing the infamous ‘Milkshake’ song by Kellis while you prepare this milk pop! Now, I don’t want to get too technical but this will require a blender or a hand blender for these ice lollies. Get your milk or dairy alternative of your choice and pour about 200-300ml in your blender or bowl. Finely chop your strawberries and add them to the milk. Feel free to add raspberries or sweet flavours like coconut milk. However if you’re adding more fruit remember to add a little more milk to keep that lolly creamy! Blend it up, pour it in your lolly mould with the sticks and of course, freeze until frozen solid.

    The English Garden

Cucumber and fruit ice lollies on a wooden backgorund

What you need to make your ice lollies:

    Lemonade
A couple of squeezes of juice from a lime slice
    Slices of cucumber
    Elderflower cordial
    Apple juice
    A measuring jug
    A shot glass
    Lolly moulds with sticks

Old chap, the ice lollies will have you come over all British quite suddenly! 'The English Garden' ice lollies are based on the original cocktail drink, however this recipe has been tweaked a little without alcohol (cue disappointed groans from readers). Start off with adding 300ml of lemonade to your measuring jug, 150ml of apple juice, and a shot glass of lime cordial. Stir and mix together. Thinly slice some cucumber and add your preferred amount to the mix then take your slice of lime and squeeze a couple of times for a dash of bitterness. Stir your mixture again then pour in to your lolly moulds, add your sticks and freeze until frozen solid!

When you’ve made your ice lollies, remove them from your moulds by putting it in warm water to soften the ice a bit. Gradually you’ll  be able to pull your popsicle free and enjoy!

  • Tips To Keep Your Pets Cool For The Summer

Tips To Keep Your Pets Cool For The Summer

Feeling hot, hot, hot? Then it’s likely your pets are too!

Animals are just as at risk from developing heat stroke as we are. Every year thousands of pets suffer from the ill-effects of warm weather.

So we thought we’d share some hacks to keep your critters cool for the Summer!

    1. DON’T leave your pet in a hot car.

Three Shar Pei dogs with their heads hanging out the car window

Cars can reach high temperatures very quickly, like an oven the heat accumulates inside. If the temperature outdoors is 22 degrees Celsius, your car’s temperature can soar to double that or more. Dogs are especially at risk because some people still think their furry friend will stay cool with the window open. Sadly it is estimated that thousands of dogs die in hot cars each year. If you see a dog struggling while left on a warm day inside a vehicle, do not be afraid to ask a store assistant to make an announcement on the tanoy or even call the police. You might save a beloved pet’s life one day.

    1. CHECK the floor temperature with your feet.

If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet then it’s way too warm for your pets’ paws. There has been a rise in cases of mostly dogs – and a few cats – getting their paws burned purely from going for a walk or playing in the garden on a hot day. Try to keep pets indoors near a fan or in an air conditioned room when the day is a melter. If your pet is desperate to go outside, try to keep them on the grass or in a shaded area when the sun has gone in a bit. Make sure they don’t stay out for too long and keep an eye out for when they want to return indoors.

    1. For SMALL ANIMALS put a cold tile inside their home.

Five guinea pigs sitting in a row

By placing a small tile inside your critter’s cage, you’ll keep these cuties cooler in the heat. Unlike cats and dogs who have the option of sleeping on the cold tiles in the kitchen, small pets find it incredibly difficult to keep cool in the warmer weather. They can’t open their cage door to get out and thanks to their fluffy coat and wool bedding they’re permanently set for Winter weather. If they ignore the tile or are fearful of it, try putting it under their main little house to help your pet realise it’s not scary.

    1. Keep a fan nearby.

For our pets it’s a gigantic wind machine, but to us it’s just a fan. Open the windows to let the air circulate and keep the fan on to make the room even cooler. It’s perfect for dogs, cats, and small animals that have to put up with this weather in their fur coats.

    1. Let your pooch paddle!

A long haired dog enjoys cooling in down in a blue paddling pool

Paddling pools are not only perfect for your little ones during a heat wave but pets too! They’re brilliant for keeping the kids entertained as well as your dog. Dogs are brilliant swimmers and love water but if your canine is a little timid, take baby steps to make them feel safe. Positive association is key so make sure to have lots of treats on hand. It’s important to always make sure your children and pets are supervised when using the paddling pool.

    1. Make an ice pack RETREAT for your cat.

Using frozen peas or ice cubes wrapped up in a towel, you can turn your cat’s bed in to cooling relaxing retreat. Put the wrapped up ice inside a cushion in a shaded part of the room with the fan on. To make it even snugger, put the cushion inside a cat cube so the thin walls and roof act as shelter from sun rays that will keep their body covered. Even pets can get sun burn so it’s important to keep an eye on kitty for signs of heat stroke, especially if you own a hairless or fluffy breed.

    1. CHECK your reptile’s thermometer.

A young boy smiling and feeding his pet Iguana some kale

Although they’re mostly cold blooded, owners of exotic pets like reptiles and snakes must keep their temperatures regulated throughout the changing seasons. Make sure you check the thermometer and monitor any changes or drops in the heat. Avoid placing their terrarium in direct sunlight or warm rooms. If your scaly pet BFF needs a hot climate, then they will love this heat! Just switch off their tank heater for a few hours while carefully monitoring the temperature, after all you don’t want your buddy to overheat either!

    1. Let your RATS go pea diving.

This tip may just be relegated to pet rats but it is an ingenious idea! Simply fill a paint tray with mid temperature water to create a mini pool with a shallow and deep end. Cook some peas and when they’re cool, place them inside the water-filled tray. Release your ratties and marvel at their incredible diving and swimming skills to fish out those peas! It’ll cool them down, give them exercise and a lovely healthy treat!

    1. Dog owners can make Pup-sicles!

Four pink bone shaped ice lollies for pet dogs to stay cool

No we’re not going crazy, this is really a thing people! If you don’t want to be holding the lolly stick for your dog then it might be better to use an ice cube tray to keep this treat smaller. You can use fruits and veggies like peas, sweet potato, carrots, or tomatoes, blended together to pour inside your moulds for a healthy lolly. Top up their protein with chicken or beef broth lollies or tuna in brine for a low fat meat feast. Instead of water, use the brine from inside the can of tuna as your lollies’ bases and only add water if it’s needed to make a larger pupsicle. If you have a blender or food processor you can always use that instead of having a transparent effect ice treat!

    1. Keep the WATER topped up.

A young Jack Russell puppy drinking water from his owner's hand

And finally the best advice we can give to you is to keep your pets hydrated!! Ensure your pets' water bowl and your cup is topped up with refreshing water!
