Trick or treat! That's right, it's that time of the year once again; Halloween is almost upon us!

What better way to celebrate this horrifying season than with mouth-watering Halloween sweets?! Whether you wish to hand them out to trick-or-treaters or use them during spooky-scary Halloween parties, Poundstretcher have you covered with a selection of deliciously terrifying Halloween sweets!

Halloween, formerly known as All Hallows Eve, has been thought to have its beginnings in pagan festivals held around the end of October here in the UK. People originally believed that the spirits of the dead wandered amongst the living. To avoid any nasty confrontations, they dressed in costumes whenever they had t go outside.

Trick-or-treating arose from these beliefs. The tradition of going from house-to-house 'trick-or-treating' in the UK goes as far back as the 16th century. Throughout the years these customs were outlawed, changed, and developed into the celebrations we see today.

So, if you're seeking for more treats than tricks this year, why not celebrate this  Halloween in 2017 with Poundstretcher? Our range of affordable and fantastic Halloween sweets will surely be a pleasant shock.

Or maybe you prefer some brain food instead? Have a mind-tingling sensation with these brain rot sherbet bottles. They're all perfect for Halloween parties and are all just £1 each!

    Spooky Scary Swizzels

Maybe you don't want to be feasting on body parts and eyeballs? Maybe you'd rather have a Halloween that's full of Swizzels sweets instead?!

We have a wide array from Squashies to traditional drumsticks, but why settle for the same old stuff? It's Halloween, try something themed for the occasion! Like this Swizzels Trick Or Treat Lolly Mix, or how about some Squashies with their special orange & blackcurrant flavours?

Fancy something in higher quantity? We have you covered with these Swizzels Monster Treats of pure hair-raising delight!

  • 5 MUST HAVE Argan Oil Hair Care Products for £5

Argan Oil: The Secret to Gorgeous Hair!

    614x363 argan oil bottle

Argan oil, in recent years, has become THE must have product for healthy hair. Sourced from the kernels of Moroccan Argan trees, Argan oil has become known as ‘liquid gold’ for its ability to transform hair, through the huge amounts of nutrients it contains, such as Vitamin E and fatty acids.

    614x363 Argan Kernels

We, at Poundstretcher, understand the importance of healthy hair but don’t think you need to spend the earth! Argan oil is in popular demand and can be pricey but we have huge bargains on our Argan oil hair products so you can revitalise your hair for less!

Transform Your Hair with Argan Oil for £5 at Poundstretcher!

    1. Rejuvenating Shampoo with Argan Oil Extracts

Argan Oil Shampoo, 300ml Argan Oil Shampoo, 300ml

Argan oil shampoo is a great product to use on a daily basis. Many shampoos can strip the natural nutrients needed to keep your hair healthy and can leave your hair drab, dry and fragile.

614x363 Damp Hair applying Argan Oil

The Argan oil extracts in this shampoo nourishes and moisturises your hair, replenishing day-to-day damage caused by elements like the sunshine, and maintaining a consistent healthy glow.

The consistent use of Argan oil shampoo will ensure your hair will always be soft, smooth and strong, as well as being protected and nourished!

    1. Luxurious Conditioner with Argan Oil Extracts

This day-to-day conditioner is sumptuously hydrating, leaving your hair silky smooth!

Argan Oil Conditioner, 300ml Argan Oil Conditioner, 300ml

Many conditioners can look and feel like they’ve enriched your hair just after washing but, after a couple of hours, your hair feels greasy at the roots, dry at the tips and looks, all together, sorry for itself!

What you need is a conditioner that’s going to truly replenish the moisture back into your scalp, roots and tips and maintain it throughout the day.

    614x363 Blonde Healthy Hair

This Argan oil conditioner will hydrated your hair, leaving it feeling sumptuous, shiny and frizz-free for the whole day. Argan oil is also a truly exceptional ‘detangle’r so is especially effective on hair that’s regularly bleached or is naturally thick and curly!

The shampoo and conditioner combination are great for busy people who have no time for leave-in conditioners but still want hair that ‘WOW’s!

    1. Heat Defence Spray with Argan Oil Extracts

Nowadays, most people use straightening irons, curling tongues or, at the very least, a hair dryer. The emphasis is usually: the hotter the tool, the better the results.

    614x363 Heat Damage Hair

That is, until the day after the night before and your hair is dry, brittle and knotted into one big hairball…

One of the best ways to enjoy styling your hair without worrying about the ‘next-day’ repercussions is using a heat defence spray.

    614x363 Heat hair tools

Although there are many to choose from, this leave-in heat defence spray with Argan oil extracts is a high contender. Because Argan oil is naturally packed with nourishing oils, vitamins and fatty acids– a formula that ensures complete protection of your hair’s nutrients and moisture under hot temperatures.

All you do is apply it generously to damp hair from root to tip, to ensure your entire head is thoroughly protected.

Heat Defence Leave-In Spray Heat Defence Leave-In Spray, 150ml

So, if you’re a busy bee who hasn’t got time to sit around and wait for your hair to dry naturally or you love styling with straighteners or curlers, this is the perfect product to make sure you hair stays looking bouncy and healthy, whatever your lifestyle!

    1. Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask

Everyone needs a good pampering session every now and then. Whatever kind of hectic life you live, it’s important to have some time out to treat yourself!

614x363 Argan oil and kernels spilled

This Argan Oil hair mask is one of those ‘low capital, high yield’ type beauty investments. Although there is the minor process of massaging the sumptuously creamy mixture into your hair and ensuring it covers it from root to tip, that is basically it.

Argan Oil Hair Mask, 220ml Argan Oil Hair Mask, 220ml

This hair mask relies specifically on leaving it alone for a length of time on your hair so is a fantastically low maintenance beauty product for those ‘no-fuss’ type people!

You can even wrap your hair in a towel and leave it in over night! Then just wash it off with shampoo and conditioner to reveal nourished, rejuvenated and incredibly shiny hair!

    614x363 Laughin shiny hair

This pot of ‘magical’ cream is a bargain from Poundstretcher and requires barely any effort with truly amazing results!

Who says you have to spend endless hours and hundreds of pounds to get healthy, beautiful-looking hair?!

    1. Argan Oil Hair Treatment

Argan Oil Hair Treatment, 50ml Argan Oil Hair Treatment, 50ml

No matter how well we try to look after our hair, life can still take its toll so sometimes you need to put a little extra time and effort into keeping it healthy.

    614x363 hair with treatment

With this intensive hydrating hair treatment, the Argan oil is high in antioxidants, which means it is great for repairing and rejuvenating damaged hair! As well as this, it helps lock in much-needed moisture, leaving your hair shiny and strong!

    614x363 Strong Hair

This hair treatment is also a miracle worker if your hair has frizzy tendencies, too. You can use it like an ointment to transform your hair, whatever the weather, leaving it smooth without losing volume.

Basically, forget Harry Potter or Unicorns– this Argan oil hair treatment is magic in a bottle!

    The Harry Potter series – J.K. Rowling (1997 – 2007)

    Harry-Potter-Wizarding-World-Weekly

You might think the whole Daniel Radcliffe/Rupert Grint/Emma Watson combo is gripping, interesting and even, from time to time, quite humorous, but that is just the tip of the Marauder’s Map...

    harry potter who are you

You might think, who am I to disregard the films so flippantly—especially since they are, after all, the 4th highest-grossing film franchise of all time—but the books are something else entirely!

Not only will you discover important details that cannot be found in the films due to screen-time restraints, J. K. Rowling has that sort of infectious writing style that is unpretentious and accessible to most audiences, whilst being nail-bitingly gripping.

WARNING: Possible side effects include: A clinical inability to put the books down resulting in lack of sleep and the possible hallucination of 'snitches' flying round your head...

    Books in order:

    The Philosopher’s Stone

    The Chamber of Secrets

    The Prisoner of Azkaban

    The Goblet of Fire

    The Order of the Phoenix

    The Half-Blood Prince

    The Deathly Hallows

Bridget Jones – Helen Fielding (1996)

    BRIDGET JONES IMAGE

Arguably one of the most unlikely yet loved modern-day heroines to hit the screens, Bridget Jones has waddled her way through our screens since 2001. Shining an unforgiving light on the day-to-day trials of a single woman’s reality, she obliviously dresses inappropriately for work, is outrageously clumsy and makes more than one painful attempt to speak in public – and that’s just the tip of the Turkey Curry.

    BRIDGE JONES CARPET GIF

As well as this, her choosing of bad relationships is something that anyone—not just women—can relate to… But Renée Zellweger hasn’t always been the face of this fearless female!

    Bridget Jones car

The thirty-something’s journey began as a column in The Independent newspaper and was so popular it became a fully-fledged novel in 1996. Written by Helen Fielding, there are three books now to match the films and, yes, the films are nothing short of hilarious, but the quick-witted writing of Fielding will have you laughing out loud!

    Bridget Jones book

REMEMBER: This book series is the perfect antidote to a bad mood. It’s difficult to feel glum when you’re following Bridget Jones and optimism even in the face of the many comical disasters!

    The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – J. R. R. Tolkien (1937, 1954)

    The One Ring

You may have sat through many extended hours of Middle Earth’s ups and downs from the comfort of your own T.V. but, honestly, there is no better person to tell those lengthy stories about tiny, shoe-less men, magical jewellery and hugely dangerous journeys than J. R. R. Tolkien himself!

    The Hobbit everyone

Although the journey to the end of the books may seem as demanding as Frodo’s trek to Mount Doom, why not warm up with the smaller, less intimidating-looking The Hobbit, before tackling the toilsome task of the 1000+ paged The Lord of the Rings trilogy?
    lord-of-the-rings-1-the-fellowship-of-the-ring-movie-poster-2001-1020195991

The sense of achievement when that ring finally gets tossed into the molten lava of Mordor and destroyed forever is more emotional than Boromir’s untimely (but necessary) death.

REMEMBER: “A day may come when the courage of men [to read the book and not just watch the film] will fail… but it is not this day”

    – Aragorn, The Black Gate.

    HOBBIT AND LOTR BOOKS

    Books in order:

    The Hobbit

    The Fellowship of the Ring

    The Two Towers

    The Return of the King

    P. S. I Love you – Cecelia Ahern (2003)

    ps I love you main

You may remember this to be the film that everyone left the cinema screen resembling members of the glam rock band ‘Kiss’, but if you forgot your waterproof mascara to the cinema last time, make sure you remember it this time when you pick up the book!

PS I love you kiss film

Like the film, the book by Cecelia Ahern is funny, quirky and fresh, as well as being devilishly sad. Not for the faint-hearted, Ahern tells the story of a wife learning to deal with the death of her beloved husband through love letters sent seemingly from ‘beyond the grave’.

    PS I love you

But, despite the film being, at times, inconsolably sad, thanks to The Pogues and some very convincing acting, the book will do more to your emotions than you could ever imagine. The jokes are magnified, the characters are deeper and the grief is suffocating – a MUST READ. Yes, there is a distinct lack of Gerard Butler’s cheeky charm and Lisa Kudrow’s raw wit, but what the book lacks in performance, it makes up for in words. Trust me.

TOP TIP: Probably best to avoid reading it in public but, if you do, waterproof mascara is a MUST!

Nothing Lasts Forever – Roderick Thorp (1979)

    die-hard ACTUAL

Whilst Die Hard is arguably one of the highest ranked Christmas films, why not have a read of the Roderick Thorp novel Nothing Lasts Forever that was the inspiration behind the blockbuster hit?

    die-hard-ventilation-shaft

Following a similar story arc, a retired NYPD detective finds himself in a sticky situation on Christmas Eve, becoming targeted by a group of terrorists within the walls of a skyscraper. But even without the classic eighties happy ending and Bruce Willis in a tank top, you’ll still be on the edge of your seat, ‘Yippie Kay-Yay’ing all the way through!

The Jurassic Park Series – Michael Crichton (1990, 1995)

    Jurassic_Park_logo

Now, most people have seen the timeless Spielberg adaptation, Jurassic Park that stormed the cinemas in 1993, however not many people might have bothered to pick up the two Michael Crichton novels released from 1990 that inspired the whole concept.

Strip away the exhaustive arrogance of Jeff Goldblum, the dramatized backing music and Richard Attenborough’s ‘Father Christmas’-esque portrayal of the park owner, John Hammond and you’ll begin to get a sense of how the books differ.

    jurassic-park-novel

Strangely sinister, epically exciting and action-packed, the books are not to be missed out on. So, fasten your seatbelts because this story will be bumpier than a ride in one of those Park cars being chased by a herd of Raptors!

    Books in order:

    Jurassic Park

    The Lost World

One Day – David Nicholls (2009)

    SPOILER ALERT!

    one day film image

Now, this film became famous for more than just the heart-wrenching story. This was the film to prove that, no matter how many acting awards you’ve won over the years, a Leeds accent is still a tricky one to execute.

The film’s story is a close parallel to the book’s—a typical story of boy meets girl, then life takes over and drives them in different directions, naturally creating a ‘will they, won’t they?’ scenario throughout.

    ONE DAY FILM

Whilst the film managed to maintain some of the warmth and intelligence found in the book, it is dreadfully let down by Anne Hathaway’s uneven West Yorkshire accent. Described as ‘totally inconsistent’ by fans, the heroine, Emma Morley (Hathaway), dips between an uppity BBC news reporter and a non-descript Lancashirian, which gets so irritating towards the end that the shock of her death is more of a relief that she’s stopped talking than anything else.

    one day film 2

At least in the book, you don’t have to wince every time 'Emma' opens her mouth, plus it sparks ounces more charm, humour and emotion than the films captures so grab a copy!

The Shining – Stephen King (1977)

    Heres-Johnny

You may remember a frenzied Jack Nicholson shoving his head through the axe-wounded bathroom door and introducing himself as someone called ‘Johnny’? Well if you thought that was scary enough, you obviously have never read the Stephen King original novel.

Hold on to your crayons because it’s about to get ‘redruM’!

    red rum shining

“Surely it can’t be as scary as the film…?”, you might say. Without the screechy music, snappy edits and Nicholson’s gut flipping, core-shaking performance at being a nutcase, it’s surely nowhere near as scary!

    But you’d be gravely mistaken.

King is known for many things but mainly that he is THE scare-King when it comes to his stories. Horror knows no boundaries with his writing. This book will literally reach up from the page and, with unyielding hands, drag you in to the nightmarish Overlook Hotel where everything is ten times scarier and the caretaker Jack is even more chilling.

    the shining book

TOP TIPS: Make sure you have a good supply of soothing drinks (Hot Chocolate, Horlicks – you know the kind), try to avoid reading it when you’re home alone and, for goodness sake, DO NOT read it before bed!

    Final say…

So whether you’re a bookworm or a film fiend, these books will have you either gripped, giggling, sobbing or cowering behind your sofa so switch off the tele today and get reading!

  • The HOW TO not get stuck in the mud this Festival Season

    MUSIC FESTIVAL - ˈfɛstɪv(ə)l/

    noun

    plural noun: music festivals

    1. An organised series of live music, avant-garde dance moves and dwindling standards of hygiene, typically held in one place annually
    2. A day or period of celebration where most social norms are abandoned, muddiness is a staple fashion statement and being drenched becomes the threat that umbrellas the entire event.

    Bridget Jones Festival

Whether you’re a seasoned festival goer or it’s your first time in the 'strawberry fields', most people have seen the years of media coverage in Glastonbury capturing thousands of sodden and grotty music fans squelching about and becoming engulfed in relentless barrages of torrential rain.

But don’t ‘Freak Out’ — stay Chic!

    shutterstock_298767080

Get stocked up with these inexpensive essentials so you can successfully 'eat, sleep, rave, repeat' like Fatboy for the duration and leave the event feeling 'the best, the best, the best of you'....

Camping Tools: From ditches to Duchess

    shutterstock_257146174

Obviously most people remember to bring a tent as standard  but, when it comes to camping, especially at a festival, there are so many added extras that you can pick up for next to nothing at Poundstretcher which will make bracing the 'great' outdoors infinitely more comfortable!

    1. Don't get stuck in the 'mud'dle...shutterstock_424777246

When you're having a fabulous time watching the Sunset with Ed Sheeran, the last thing you think you'll care about is grass stains or a damp bum!

    shutterstock_331484618

But, later, when you're shivering from laying in what was effectively a bog in your bare legs, you'll probably not care about that 'Castle on the Hill'.

You will, however, probably wish you'd brought a waterproof picnic blanket along to keep you and your friends comfy and dry throughout the whole concert!279486-picnic travel rug_yellow_1000x1000

At £3.99 they’re cheap, bright and practical - perfect for chilling out on, come rain or shine!

Or if you're really going to pull out all the stops, pick up a folding camping chair!

    1000x1000 289360 - GREEN FOLDAWAY CHAIR

You might get some stick from your more ‘free-spirited’ mates who reckon 'you should be dancing' all weekend but, with a built-in drinks holder and in four different colours, you’ll definitely have the last laugh!

Especially when you’re perched on the only thing separating you from the mud that’s claimed the lives of most of your mates’ wellies.

    shutterstock_294538256

Plus, it comes with an easy carry bag to fold it back into so you can always guarantee somewhere comfy to sit!

    shutterstock_259018820

    2. Don't let mealtimes become a Tragedy...

Whilst most people spend the festival walking around looking for their sanity, you may find you fancy something to nibble at some point.

    _YPS0378

Plastic kitchen ware is a great camping idea. Cups (for that much-needed Coffee in the morning), disposable cutlery and plates. After all, you'll need somewhere to put those sausages you burnt on the disposable BBQ

    Picnic-Sets-Both-web

HEALTH TOOLS: REMEMBER, Your body is a TEMPLE, NOT A BIN BAG.

Despite spending 361 days of the year acting moderately normal with three meals a day and ‘a couple’ in the pub on a Friday after work, some people get that caught up in the hippy vibe of a festival, they end up forgetting how to look after themselves within the realms of what’s socially acceptable.

    shutterstock_509370406

Let’s be honest-- festivals are both physically and mentally strenuous, and can only be completed successfully by savvy people. Please note: these are NOT the people who say things like ‘water’s for the weak’ or insist on relating everything back to their ‘gap year’.

So, here’s a list of things you might not have thought of taking but you will definitely need when 'stayin' alive'  at a festival and avoid coming out when it’s home time looking like you’ve just escaped the set of Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ video...

    FMCG FESTIVAL

And finally, make sure you’re not the one needing somebody to 'lean on' at Major Lazer and 'reload' with some Red Bull!

So, there you have it—the list of handy festival essentials at bargain prices! And it doesn't stop there! We have a massive selection of choccies, crisps and nibbles on offer so 'don't you forget about' Poundstretcher and make a pit-stop before you head off to Just Dance!FESTIVAL NIBBLES UPDATED

  • The HOW TO guide: get fired up for National BBQ Week and avoid the backseat grillers...

    shutterstock_431332126

If there’s one thing us Brits are good at apart from complaining about the weather it’s justifying a BBQ the minute the sun comes out. It could be 4°C with gale-force winds but, if there’s a whisper of sunshine, you can guarantee an apocalyptic-type surge will descend on the supermarkets for bread buns and burgers.

But as national BBQ week is upon us, and, with the weather set to reach fore-head burning temperatures, I feel it necessary to map out the essentials you’ll be needing to make sure you put on a show-stopping BBQ!

    Tools

    shutterstock_413326225

BBQs have come a long way since the days where you’d shove a couple of sausages on a disposable BBQ and wait until they were suitably scorched. Nowadays, even the disposable BBQs are like inexpensive mini-ovens so it’s easier to get your own alfresco grill on the go! Generally, what you pay for is what you get but for those of us not willing to take out a second mortgage for a piece of equipment that, realistically, might only be used a couple of times a year, you can pick up a decent portable BBQ and get change from a tenner!

    Stock your Toolbox!

shutterstock_400890382Secondly, it’s important to remember the essential equipment to optimise your cooking experience whilst minimising any unnecessary hiccups. The last thing you want is singed fingers because you picked up your Rib-Eye directly off the grill with your bare hands. Be prepared! And get your Barbi toolkit stocked with prongs, tongues and a spatula. You can thank me later when your chicken breasts are evenly cooked and your fingerprints are still in-tact.

    Condiments and Sides

They say behind every great man, there’s a great woman supporting him and the same applies to a BBQ. It’s not all about the BBQ. To be successful, a BBQ cannot stand alone— no BBQ’s an island. It’s almost become its own culture— a state of mind, an art-form.

shutterstock_452355661When you go to a BBQ, you know you’re not going to be sticking to that beach-ready body diet you’ve been miserably following all week. It’s the weekend! Those two beautiful days where Sauvignon flows at lunch time and nibbling becomes a national sport.

    The bits on the side.

Make sure you kit the tables out with the basics; nuts, cucumber batons, egg mayo, spring rolls, samosas, battered mushrooms, sausage rolls, pork pies! Then, if you’ve got space; crispy sweet potato fries and cheesy nachos, pasta salads and coleslaw are all strong contenders to add to the grazing table too!

    Get on the sauce

But no BBQ would be complete without an army of condiments ; mayos, mustards, ketchup, BBQ sauces, home-made salsa and guacamole, tangy salad dressings and creamy Hummus. Get ‘on the sauce’ this BBQ season and embrace the benefits of a good Saturday afternoon snacking session!

    shutterstock_520182778

So, give your guests something proper to go with their chicken wings. Long gone are the days when a block of cheddar and a family-sized jar of pickled onions would’ve sufficed. You’re playing with the big [hot]dogs now so make sure you take your spread seriously!

Remember: This isn’t the charity bingo at your local town hall.

    This… Is… BBQ’ing.

    The Main Event

Once upon a time, a British BBQ would typically have involved the cheapest of minced beef burgers and possibly a 60p pack of sausages thrown on to be cremated for an added treat. How times have changed!

So make sure you don’t get a ‘grill’ing from your guests and get creative with what you’re putting between your baps this season!

Get your guests chomping at the ‘spit’.

    shutterstock_596641181

If you have the time, marinating is a good way to go. Toss a few prawns in with some garlic, chilli and a squeeze of lime for a fiery Thai-style starter. Or maybe give your guests a taste of the exotic with some middle-eastern Lamb Kebabs? If you want to keep it simple yet delicious, tin foil a seasoned Sea Bass fillet with a lemon wedge nestled in there for zest or why not go the whole hog and get sizzling some Sirloins?

The world, as they say, is your oven.

    And for the foragers…

BBQ’s are not just about catering for the carnivores anymore. No longer do the vegetarians of the group have to sit in the corner, sadly crunching through blackened bean burgers and bread sticks whilst everybody else gnashes at chicken drumsticks with a Henry VIII - type vigour.

    shutterstock_589129160

Set to overtake Prosecco in terms of trendiness this summer: the dawn of Halloumi. Get those skewers piercing through peppers and courgettes and fire up some ‘squeaky cheese’ for a tasty veggie alternative to chicken! Mushrooms, aubergine, beef tomatoes- with the right herbs and spices, you can finally make your veggie mates’ mouths water because, after all, they deserve to enjoy a BBQ too!

    The final act.

shutterstock_103581095Obviously when it comes to desserts, it’s up to you how you do it. Everyone loves the great British summer classics; Eton Mess, Victoria sponge and, of course, the illustrious tinned fruit trifle. But if you’re looking for scrumptiousness with minimal effort, then BBQ’ing a banana in foil with some chocolate works a treat! Obviously you can improvise with your choice of chocolate- anything from Lindt to a chopped up Crème Egg, and when it’s ready, you’ll have a delicious gooey treat to demolish. A guaranteed crowd pleaser!

It’s messy but it is so worth it.

    Revive your refreshments!

For many connoisseurs of the 'Bar-Be-Cue' realm, the food is the main event but if your drinks station isn’t properly  prepped, you may end up with a small rebellion to mediate. Having a crate strewn in the corner with a couple of bottles of warm pop for the drivers just won’t cut it anymore.

People are a lot harder to impress nowadays. So, don’t fall short of the order and give your guests something to fizz about! In recent years, this retro-quirky-chic style has become immensely popular but can sometimes be pricey to replicate.

278841-mason jar with straw_group on chopping boar_1000x1000Getting some fun glasses, though, can be a cheap way to create a ‘wow’ factor. Drinking your Orange juice out of a cute mason jar with a straw or an old-fashioned style milk bottle would definitely put a smile on your face- even if you are the designated driver. And from 49p a glass, you can plug a cork in your spending.

And if you want to be really impressive, get your hands on a fabulous drinks dispenser for the table. Whether your style is vintage or quirky, a dispenser is an incredibly easy way to tart-up that homemade fruit punch you probably should’ve followed a recipe to make…

Jazz up your drinks and make your guests feel special — it's a party, after all!

Give your garden a spring clean.

Nobody’s expecting a ‘Mrs Bucket’ type approach when it comes to tidying up your garden after the grotty winter months, but there are a few economical and simple ways to inject some life back into your garden.

Firstly, make sure you’ve got enough furniture.

shutterstock_104506379Although most people tend to end up milling around the garden lazily, chatting, nibbling and slurping their Pimms, you want to give your guests the option of a comfy seat. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to get some nice chairs. Outdoor furniture has come on leaps and bounds since those abominable plastic white yard chairs that your Grandma always brought out for garden parties.

Pick up a few panama chairs – they come in loads of bright colours and actually make you want to sit down— not like their predecessors. But if they don’t take your fancy, there are loads to choose from, varying in colour, material and comfort, so you can give your guests a proper place to curl up when the sun sets and everyone’s eaten their fill!

    Twinkle under the stars…

    shutterstock_415274170

And for when the sun goes down, sprinkle some solar onto your garden. With gorgeous fairy lights, hanging bulbs and stake lights from as little as 75p, it’s easy to give your garden a sparkling make-over without blowing your budget!

So, there you have it —

—a guide to not getting a ‘roast’ing this summer by bettering your neighbours’ BBQs and making sure yours is the best BBQ your street has ever seen!

  • Top Tips For Travelling With Your Dog

Top Tips For Travelling With Your Dog

Summer holiday season is officially round the corner!

You’re all set for travelling: the case is packed, the kids are covered in sunscreen, and your better half is trying to update the sat nav for the journey.

Then you spot that face and those big eyes full of love.

It’s never easy leaving your pet at home but it’s even worse when you know you have a week of sun, sea, and sand while they’re in kennels waiting for their human to come home.

So why not take your critter with you?
A golden retriever dog wearing a hat while laying next to a suitcase

Hundreds of Brits every year take their pets on holiday, with dogs being the most popular holiday companion of choice.

If Fido doesn’t find the car scary, hasn’t been unwell recently, and is (relatively) well behaved then there are plenty of dog-friendly hotels and self-catering holiday cottages in the UK and abroad.

It’s important to be sensible about your pet when you’re on holiday.
A hipster woman takes photos of her holiday spot with her dog on an old vintage camera

After all, if you’re going to somewhere like Disneyland, it’s probably not a good idea that your pooch comes with you just to be cooped up in a hotel room.

If you’re going to be off on dog-free adventures all day, it’s much better to leave your dog with a friend or family member they trust.

Pack all their essentials like their favourite toys and treats so they don’t get homesick.

And if you’re worried about them missing you, sleep with a throw or blanket for a few days to give your dog so your scent can comfort them while you’re away.

So you’ve got your dog friendly holiday destination sorted, what else do you need?
A little girl is sat holding her dog's lead in the park

Planning your journey is essential when travelling with your pet. It’s far easier to go exploring if you’ve got the kids and your dog too if you stay in the UK rather than go abroad.

Which means chances are you’re likely to be driving.

Remember to check the weather before you book and plan your journey. Cars become incredibly hot quickly which can cause heat stroke that could turn deadly for your dog, so pick a day with a fairly cool temperature to set off. Plan the quickest and safest journey where you can take regular breaks to stretch your beloved pup’s paws and give them the chance to respond to nature’s call.

It’s so important to keep your dog safe while travelling in the car.
Sable Cocker Spaniel puppies wearing tartan ribbons while peering out from their puppy crate

Yours, your family’s and your dog’s safety can be at stake if your beloved woofer isn’t properly seated in the car. If you need to stop quickly to avoid an accident or if your dog decides to move in to the driver’s seat, your journey could prove to be fatal.

A dog crate is a fantastic way to travel with your canine companion. If you’ve used a crate during puppy training then you’re off to a good start because your dog already feels safe inside it and knows that it is their space.

Don’t worry if your pet is new to crates and do not feel bad about using one either!

It’s natural to feel a bit guilty about crating your dog, however if you start off using it indoors as a safe space where your dog can relax then they actually enjoy being in their little den.

In the months leading up to your holiday, put their favourite treats, cushion, and dog bed  inside to make your dog feel positive about the crate if it’s all new. They'll eventually view travelling in the car as relaxing and fun!

If there’s too much hate for the crate, another alternative is a doggy safety harness. It acts as a seat belt to keep your pet from flinging forward in an accident and to stop them from escaping to the driver’s area.

You’ve finally reached your destination after multiple toilet stops, u-turns, and arguments with the sat nav. So what else do you need to keep in mind?
A family all dressed in white playing with their pet German Shepherd Alsatian dog on the beach

Pay attention to signs in case they say any beaches or parks are dog-free zones and if there’s any dogs without a lead that are behaving badly.

When you’re travelling and in a new place that you don’t know very well, you have to remember that this is not the same as walking your dog back home in their familiar territory.

There may be people around who are frightened of dogs who might think that your dog’s happy barking and jumping about is actually a sign of aggression. Unless you’re in a dog park, keep your dog on the lead. Even the best behaved dogs struggle to contain their excitement sometimes and can get a bit hyper!

Your dog will be massively overwhelmed by all the new sights and smells to experience when you're travelling, so it’s vital that you brush up on teaching them the basics of training like sit, stay, and recall to keep them from becoming uncontrollable while excited.

But finally the most important tip we can give you is: Keep the water flowing to make sure your dog is hydrated throughout your trip.
A majestic husky dog drinking water that's being poured from a bottle in to someone's hands

A travel bowl and a water bottle will let you keep the liquids up but also remember to keep an eye on temperatures if you’re out and about. Dogs should always have access to a shaded area where they can have a break from playing Frisbee and exploring.

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your amazing holiday adventures!

  • The Ultimate Guide To Summer Skin Care

The Ultimate Guide To Summer Skin Care

Summer is right around the corner and things are heating up!
We don’t mean to throw some major shade on your Summer fun but we need to talk about skin care.

It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is, whether it’s dry or oily, and if you have freckles or moles.

    Sun damage does not discriminate.

It can affect anyone which means it’s really important that we show our skin some TLC during the warmer seasons!

So let’s bust some myths about Summer skin care:

Myth 1: The sun clears acne and makes me appear youthful.
    Answer: FALSE
This is the ultimate myth that gets passed down as ‘good’ advice! While the sun may help reduce bacteria in your skin, it will cause more breakouts by drying out your skin which stimulates your natural oils in to overdrive. The main reason people think their skin looks better after they've been in the sun is because their tan is covering up any small red blemishes and scarring. That’s why people notice their acne seemingly ‘returning’ a couple of weeks after a beach holiday!

Myth 2: I have darker skin so I can stay out in the sun for much longer.
A pretty woman in the sun looking in the distance

Answer: Sort of TRUE but mostly FALSE
Darker skin does have a little more resistance to UVA/UVB rays, however this doesn't mean you can go out sunbathing sans sunscreen! Although skin cancer is uncommon for people with darker skin, it can actually be a more aggressive form if it attacks. At least an SPF 15 sun lotion is advised and you still need to keep your sun bathing time limited. People with fairer skin are incredibly vulnerable to sun damage, which is why if you have blonde or ginger hair you turn lobster red very quickly on the beach! This is because fairer skin contains less melanin, the stuff in our bodies that helps counteract the sun’s rays, than darker skin.

Myth 3: I don’t need sunscreen because I’m trying to top up my vitamin D.
    Answer: FALSE
Vitamin D deficiency may be on the rise but that doesn't mean you can ditch the sunscreen for the D! To top up your vitamin D levels, you only need about 10 – 15 minutes outside in the sun.

Myth 4: If I wear fake tan, it will protect me from sun damage.
    Answer: Definitely FALSE
Fake tanning sprays and gels are completely different to sunscreen but unfortunately this is one myth that won’t stop resurfacing. Even if you’re wearing fake tan, you still need to apply your protective high SPF sunscreen and after sun lotion.

Myth 5: I don’t need to reapply my sunscreen after I've been in the pool.
A group of friends smiling in a pool on a sunny day

    Answer: FALSE
A dip in the pool may cool you off but it also washes away your sunscreen! Wait a few minutes for your fresh SPF coat to soak in to your skin and don’t forget to reapply as soon as you’re out of the pool!

Myth 6: When it’s cloudy I do not need to wear sunscreen.
    Answer: FALSE
It’s a hot day and despite the sun hiding behind those fluffy white clouds, you still need to wear your sunscreen. Your skin still become damaged and burnt from the UVA and UVB rays poking through the cloudy sky.

Myth 7: My hair protects my scalp from being burned.
A boy holding some sun lotion with a sun cream moustache on his face while wearing a straw hat

    Answer: FALSE
Sadly your hair holds no protection against the sun and if you leave your hat at home you’re in danger of enduring painful sun burn on your head! Luckily you can get non-greasy sun lotions to protect your scalp, which is a saviour for those who have receding hair or a bald head. Keep those bald patches beautiful with a quick spray of sunscreen formulated especially for this sensitive area.

Myth 8: Getting a tan from sun bathing is healthy.
    Answer: FALSE
Despite the phrase ‘a healthy tan’, getting a tan from sun bathing is actually a sign that you've damaged your body! The sun’s rays travel deep in to the layers of your skin gradually burning you. When we sunbathe our skin is triggered in to producing a chemical called melanin which helps protect your skin from frying too much. The melanin makes your skin appear golden and tanned, so when you see your skin start to glow it’s your body’s way of telling you to turn down the heat!

Myth 9: My child doesn't need a high SPF because their young skin is stronger.
A little girl smiling wearing sunglasses and swim wear on the beach getting sun lotion applied by her parent

    Answer: FALSE
Children’s skin is actually more sensitive than a fully grown adult’s which is why kid’s sunscreen is usually an extremely high SPF. The younger you are when you start exposing your skin to the sun, the quicker your skin will prematurely age and become damaged, further increasing the risk of skin cancer. Make sure your little ones have hats, plenty of sun screen and regular breaks in the shade.

Myth 10: I don’t have sunburn so I don’t need after sun lotion.
    Answer: FALSE
After all that time in the sun, your skin will be dry and need rehydrating. It’s important because it helps keep your skin healthy and will aid your body in recovering quicker from sun damage - even if you’re not at the boiled lobster phase of burning!
