  • What You May Not Know About Tea

Tea. It’s an ever important beverage here in the UK. We as a nation drink 165 million cups of tea on a daily basis; that's 60.2 billion being sipped on every year according to the UK Tea & Infusions Association. That’s a lot of brew!

I think C. S. Lewis said it best: "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me."

It's true we are a tea-loving nation, but do you think you know all there is about it? You might drink it every day, you swear by the stuff, and you know your oolong from your pu-erh. So, do you think that makes you some kind of expert? Well, maybe you are, but why don’t you try and see how many of these facts you know? On one hand, you may just learn something, and if not then you can have the satisfaction of gloating. It’s win-win.

    Where Tea Originated

Despite our nation being synonymous with tea, many others around the world had sampled and adored the beverage first. Long before we even began to enjoy a nice cuppa and a biscuit, tea was being drunk as a medicinal drink in Southwest China as early as the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). However, if you wish to believe in legends then the tale of tea goes back even further.

In 2737 BC, the Emporer of China and renowned herbologist, Shen Nung, had been waiting within the shade of a tree for his boiled drinking water. It was at that point leaves blew down and rested atop the water, infusing the flavour into it. It was there Shen Nung sampled it, and in a stroke of serendipity the drink we call tea was born. Turns out, that very tree was a Camellia Sinensis (the same plant we use to make tea today).

Whether or not this was true, the fact that tea was huge in China is no understatement. It even ranked up to being a recreational drink throughout the Tang dynasty (618 AD - 906 AD) and became their go-to national drink of choice. From there, Japanese Buddhist monks came over before introducing it back home in Japan (another nation where tea was a foundation of their culture).

Despite this, it wasn't until the latter half of the 16th Century when Europeans began to hear of this exotic beverage. It was something of a curiosity gifted from sailors as the British East India Company dominated the import market. This stayed that way until the mid-1600's when tea became known as a drink for the wealthy. This was due to the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza who was a huge tea fanatic and made it hip and fashionable.

    How Tea Plants Grow

Tea plants, Camellia Sinensis, are evergreens that mainly grow in the wilds of tropical and subtropical climates. However, did you know you can grow your own tea here in the UK? It's true! After all, the plant originates from the damp, cool mountains of China. People all across our nation have been growing their own for quite a while.

Taken from seeds and cuttings, it takes between 4 to 12 years for a tea plant to bear seeds. After that, you add on another 3 so they can be ready for harvest. The growth is best with acidic soils and naturally require at least 127cm of rain a year with elevations of up to 1,500m above sea level. They can grow up to 16m if left undisturbed, though are trimmed to waist-height when grown to be harvested.

If you are planning to grow your own tea you needn't worry about the elevation. Whilst the height provides a better flavour to the leaves (due to the higher up it is planted means it will grow slower), it isn't a necessary factor. What is important is to keep the plant in plenty of sunlight and keep them sheltered from the harsh British weather until they become taller (anything past 1m and they can fend for themselves outside).

    Which Teas Help Burn Fat?

There's growing tea, and there's drinking it; it's the latter you'd care more about, right? Well, tea has so many wonderful benefits to it. There's more to this long-time favourite than just having something warm to sip on when it's cold or a drink to accompany your afternoon biscuit(s).

For instance, take burning fat; it's something more people are becoming concerned about and are turning to tea for help. However, you need the right type first to better gain the desired effects.

Most teas are great at helping with managing your figure; be it to give your metabolism a little boost, reduce bloating, help burn calories easily, or shut down the need for snacking. It's a wonderful drink, but there are teas that work better than most. These would be the likes of pu-erh, oolong, and rooibos.

Pu-erh, a fermented Chinese tea, is great for reducing belly fat and lowering the amount of fat in the blood. The same can be said about rooibos tea, a sweet drink made from leaves from the Rooibos bush in South Africa. It's said that the polyphenols and flavonoids found in it inhibit the forming of new fat cells, and is a great way to kick-start your metabolism.

Now here's one that's quite well known; oolong tea. This drink is rich in antioxidants and is a traditional Chinese tea. It can assist in controlling cholesterol, boosts metabolism, and aids digestion. It's what you'd expect from the land where tea was originated and used as medicine, right?

It's also full of catechins that help you burn fat quickly, even so much as a pound a week according to a six-week Chinese study. Paired with exercise and healthy eating, all it takes it sipping some tea now and then to really aid in your endeavours.

    Which Tea Doesn’t Have Caffeine?

Now, certain teas might claim to be decaf, in which it doesn't have any caffeine in. However, whilst it is true that they have significantly fewer amounts compared to non-decaf, there are still traces of caffeine that remain. So, it's not caffeine-free, is it?

But don't lose hope! There does exist a tea out there that has no caffeine in it whatsoever, and it's fantastic for you health-wise. It's a tea you've bound to have heard of: herbal tea.

Be it a sweet peppermint, a calming chamomile, or a sharp ginger tea, all of these are great for being non-caffeinated. So, you can enjoy a nice refreshing hot drink, whilst not pumping your body full of caffeine. Oh, and all of these are great for digestive issues, whilst peppermint especially helps clear nasal passages, chamomile is great for anxiety, and ginger is perfect for nausea.

Which Tea Has The Most Antioxidants?

Now, we've all heard of antioxidants, right? They're found in fresh fruits and vegetables, alongside tea. They have great health benefits such as clearing out unwanted things from your bloodstream and have been known to reduce the signs of ageing by minimising wrinkles. They even can help your mind by relieving stress.

So, which teas are best when you want more antioxidants in your diet? Well, it's the coloured teas that are what you're looking for; black, green and white. They all offer the same cardiovascular benefits, with each having a slight difference.

To start with, black tea is the most oxidised of them all. Though, it still contains a similar amount of antioxidants as it did before it went through oxidisation. It's said that drinking 3 or more cups a day may actually reduce the risk of a heart attack and promotes blood vessel relaxation. However, it contains more caffeine than green tea and contains a lot of polyphenols. It all depends on what you want out of your drink and your sense of taste.

White tea is similar to the above, though due to it being dried in natural sunlight, it means that the catechin levels are much higher, but lowers tannins levels, which affects the taste and consistency.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter which one you drink. There isn't an overall 'best tea' that is superior to everything. The taste, the caffeine content, the availability, even the cost, all of these make a big difference but all the teas provide the same health benefits. They can reduce the risk of cancer, helps the skin look its best, boosts your immune system and promotes a healthy heart.

Which Tea Is Best For A Cold?

Now, despite the sun being out (for the most part) the risk of colds are of course still around. Being a hot drink you'd assume that tea would be great to drink to help chase away nasty infections; but which one do you go for?

Well, like before there are many that help boosts your immune system (remember the above?). However, so I'm not repeating myself you can find lemongrass, ginger, and peppermint(that delightful menthol helps break up congestion) teas are fantastic at clearing out your nasal passages. The above also serve as calming and refreshing throat soothers. There's nothing like that wonderful warm feeling that comforts your body after a nice cup of ginger tea.

Tea with honey is also a great defence when you have a cold. Pair that up with some white or green tea to destroy pathogenic bacteria, and you'll be feeling better in no time.

Which Tea Is Good For Sleep?

Sleep is an important part of your health. We don't get enough of it. There are many ways to assist you in getting you to sleep peacefully. Those delightful rain/thunderstorm soundtracks on YouTube are one way, but tea can also be the saviour in helping you get some shut-eye!

Good amounts of sleep (but also sleep that is great quality) impacts positively on your body. It helps give your body rest and a chance to repair itself. There are many teas that you could use, such as chamomile or herbal teas. With their soothing fragrance and taste it can work wonders. In fact, anything that has that calming effect is great to have when you're in bed with a good book.

However, valerian tea is a herb that can be paired with tea for fantastic results. It can help those with insomnia, anxiety, and psychological stress and acts as a natural sedative.

So there we have it, a small array of tea facts and advice to help you make the most out of Britain's favourite drink. Did you know all of the above? Was there anything in there new that you could apply to your tea-drinking life? How about one more little tidbit? There are an estimated 1,500 varieties of Camellia sinensis out there. Now, whilst we at Poundstretcher don't carry every single known one, we do sell all the top products such as Tetley, Yorkshire Tea, and PG Tips!

  • Poundstretcher’s Guide To Skin Care

    skin-care-heart

Taking care of your skin is no trifling matter. We all want our skin to look its best. And even whilst you may not feel you’re that bothered about it, you still wouldn’t want to have bad skin that's dry, unhealthy, and tired, correct?

Well, what if I were to tell you there’s a way to look after your skin for less? That’s right, with loads of products from big brands available to you (all for a good price, I might add), Poundstretcher is here to help!

From nourishing creams, facial scrubs, body lotions, and more, there's a world of skin care products that are great for your daily life.

When To Start Using Skin Care Products

There is no defined or set age when you should or shouldn’t start using skin care products. It's all about a matter of turning to them when and if your skin needs attention.

For example, if you have dry skin then you should make sure to moisturise. Or if you start to develop acne then you can use exfoliating products to combat it. Everyone is different and unique; no matter your gender, race, or ethnicity, no one's skin is exactly the same.

    acne-1606765_1920

With children, there is less of a need for skin care in regards to blemishes or exfoliation. Usually, dry skin issues and products such as sunscreen and aftersun is all they'd need. However, it’s when you arrive at your teens onwards where your skin becomes more of a priority.

As mentioned before, the focus is to use it when you need it most and continue to apply it long enough for the desired effects to show.

Which Skin Care Product Is The Great For Oily Skin?

So, for those with problem skin, why not grab a product that'll make you feel like you're in some luxury, relaxing spa but for an affordable price?

    beauty-1296164_1280

This 7th Heaven Blemish Mud (other varieties available) in a delightfully soothing aloe vera fragrance is just the item to help combat oily skin. Its deep cleansing & soothing formula is paired with its aloe juice extract, making for an effective, tranquil mask that will help relieve troubled skin from dirt and grime.

So grab a glass of bubbly, light some candles, reach for a good book, and just let your mind and face be soothed.

Which Skin Care Product Is Great For Clearing Pores?

Want something specifically designed to help clear blackheads and clear your clogged pores? Well then, get a load of this T-zone blackhead fighting facial scrub, the perfect way to battle skin issues head on and give your face a deep cleanse.

    t-zone-scrub-265212

With the tea tree extracts, you can rest assured this naturally anti-bacterial face scrub is effective at getting rid of blackheads and other facial blemishes. It's great for daily application and a perfect addition to your bathroom cabinet.

Just squeeze it out, lather it on your hands, and slather on your face before washing it off and feeling refreshed. Is there any better way to start a morning?

Which Skin Care Product Is Great For Anti-Aging?

Want to defy the appearance of wrinkles and the passage of time? Then why not give these Eden age defiance cleansing wipes a try; they're an easy to use, effective, and will make your skin feel and look so much younger.eden-age-defianceWith the use of vitamin E, these wipes help nourish and moisturise your tired skin and helps smooth out wrinkles to give you a younger looking complexion. The fact there are 25 per pack means you have ample to use whenever you feel your body needs a good cleansing.

And there you have it, a great affordable anti-aging solution. There are also other varieties available in the Eden line, such as the deep cleanse and make up removal wipes. Keep your face and body feeling cleansed and healthy whilst also making sure your make up doesn't stay on and clog your pores up even more.

When To Use Skin Care Products

So, you know of some of the products that are available to you, but when is the best time to apply them?

It all depends, once again, in when you feel the need to use them. However, when it comes to moisturising and facial scrubs, it's best to use them every day, all year-round. That's right, even in the colder months in the year it's a great idea to apply moisturisers, body butters, lotions, or creams to help your body stay hydrated for silky smooth skin for the whole year to come.

    maccademia-oil-extract-287493

The matter is that just how often is healthy? When should you be applying these facial scrubs and recovery oils?

Well, your face needs to be ideally cleaned and moisturised every morning and then once again in the evening. First, wash your face and apply the cream to your cleansed face, and from there gently rub it into your skin until fully absorbed.

With facial scrubs, it's the same except without the absorption element and you end with another wash. Cleanse with warm water, apply with a good rub, and then clear it off your face. Simple.

With your body, you could use the aforementioned macadamia oil extract body butter to hydrate and soften your skin, leaving it feeling healthy and smooth. Apply to your entire body (or in areas where you feel needs the most attention) and rub gently.

It all boils down to never neglecting your skin on a daily basis. Applying moisturisers, creams, and cleansers to your body year-round is a great way to keep it silky, whilst making sure to add daily scrubs twice a day for day and night effectiveness.

    skincare-face

    Additional Extras

A great way to apply some of these products? With the help of these Simply Cotton round cotton wool (160 pack), a set of 100% pure pads that are strong yet soft, and completely perfect for all manner of purposes.

Cleansers and face washes are fine to use from childhood upwards, but be wary of relying too much on it. We must also remember that our skin and the pores need to breathe, and sometimes an excess amount of creams and cleansers can clog them, which would then create further issues down the line. It’s all about finding balance as to when and how often you apply it.

  • The HOW TO not get stuck in the mud this Festival Season

    MUSIC FESTIVAL - ˈfɛstɪv(ə)l/

    noun

    plural noun: music festivals

    1. An organised series of live music, avant-garde dance moves and dwindling standards of hygiene, typically held in one place annually
    2. A day or period of celebration where most social norms are abandoned, muddiness is a staple fashion statement and being drenched becomes the threat that umbrellas the entire event.

    Bridget Jones Festival

Whether you’re a seasoned festival goer or it’s your first time in the 'strawberry fields', most people have seen the years of media coverage in Glastonbury capturing thousands of sodden and grotty music fans squelching about and becoming engulfed in relentless barrages of torrential rain.

But don’t ‘Freak Out’ — stay Chic!

    shutterstock_298767080

Get stocked up with these inexpensive essentials so you can successfully 'eat, sleep, rave, repeat' like Fatboy for the duration and leave the event feeling 'the best, the best, the best of you'....

Camping Tools: From ditches to Duchess

    shutterstock_257146174

Obviously most people remember to bring a tent as standard  but, when it comes to camping, especially at a festival, there are so many added extras that you can pick up for next to nothing at Poundstretcher which will make bracing the 'great' outdoors infinitely more comfortable!

    1. Don't get stuck in the 'mud'dle...shutterstock_424777246

When you're having a fabulous time watching the Sunset with Ed Sheeran, the last thing you think you'll care about is grass stains or a damp bum!

    shutterstock_331484618

But, later, when you're shivering from laying in what was effectively a bog in your bare legs, you'll probably not care about that 'Castle on the Hill'.

You will, however, probably wish you'd brought a waterproof picnic blanket along to keep you and your friends comfy and dry throughout the whole concert!279486-picnic travel rug_yellow_1000x1000

At £3.99 they’re cheap, bright and practical - perfect for chilling out on, come rain or shine!

Or if you're really going to pull out all the stops, pick up a folding camping chair!

    1000x1000 289360 - GREEN FOLDAWAY CHAIR

You might get some stick from your more ‘free-spirited’ mates who reckon 'you should be dancing' all weekend but, with a built-in drinks holder and in four different colours, you’ll definitely have the last laugh!

Especially when you’re perched on the only thing separating you from the mud that’s claimed the lives of most of your mates’ wellies.

    shutterstock_294538256

Plus, it comes with an easy carry bag to fold it back into so you can always guarantee somewhere comfy to sit!

    shutterstock_259018820

    2. Don't let mealtimes become a Tragedy...

Whilst most people spend the festival walking around looking for their sanity, you may find you fancy something to nibble at some point.

    _YPS0378

Plastic kitchen ware is a great camping idea. Cups (for that much-needed Coffee in the morning), disposable cutlery and plates. After all, you'll need somewhere to put those sausages you burnt on the disposable BBQ

    Picnic-Sets-Both-web

HEALTH TOOLS: REMEMBER, Your body is a TEMPLE, NOT A BIN BAG.

Despite spending 361 days of the year acting moderately normal with three meals a day and ‘a couple’ in the pub on a Friday after work, some people get that caught up in the hippy vibe of a festival, they end up forgetting how to look after themselves within the realms of what’s socially acceptable.

    shutterstock_509370406

Let’s be honest-- festivals are both physically and mentally strenuous, and can only be completed successfully by savvy people. Please note: these are NOT the people who say things like ‘water’s for the weak’ or insist on relating everything back to their ‘gap year’.

So, here’s a list of things you might not have thought of taking but you will definitely need when 'stayin' alive'  at a festival and avoid coming out when it’s home time looking like you’ve just escaped the set of Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ video...

And finally, make sure you’re not the one needing somebody to 'lean on' at Major Lazer and 'reload' with some Red Bull!

We have a massive selection of choccies, crisps and nibbles on offer so 'don't you forget about' Poundstretcher and make a pit-stop before you head off to Just Dance!FESTIVAL NIBBLES UPDATED

  • The HOW TO guide: get fired up for National BBQ Week and avoid the backseat grillers...

    shutterstock_431332126

If there’s one thing us Brits are good at apart from complaining about the weather it’s justifying a BBQ the minute the sun comes out. It could be 4°C with gale-force winds but, if there’s a whisper of sunshine, you can guarantee an apocalyptic-type surge will descend on the supermarkets for bread buns and burgers.

But as national BBQ week is upon us, and, with the weather set to reach fore-head burning temperatures, I feel it necessary to map out the essentials you’ll be needing to make sure you put on a show-stopping BBQ!

    Tools

    shutterstock_413326225

BBQs have come a long way since the days where you’d shove a couple of sausages on a disposable BBQ and wait until they were suitably scorched. Nowadays, even the disposable BBQs are like inexpensive mini-ovens so it’s easier to get your own alfresco grill on the go! Generally, what you pay for is what you get but for those of us not willing to take out a second mortgage for a piece of equipment that, realistically, might only be used a couple of times a year, you can pick up a decent portable BBQ and get change from a tenner!

    Stock your Toolbox!

shutterstock_400890382Secondly, it’s important to remember the essential equipment to optimise your cooking experience whilst minimising any unnecessary hiccups. The last thing you want is singed fingers because you picked up your Rib-Eye directly off the grill with your bare hands. Be prepared! And get your Barbi toolkit stocked with prongs, tongues and a spatula. You can thank me later when your chicken breasts are evenly cooked and your fingerprints are still in-tact.

    Condiments and Sides

They say behind every great man, there’s a great woman supporting him and the same applies to a BBQ. It’s not all about the BBQ. To be successful, a BBQ cannot stand alone— no BBQ’s an island. It’s almost become its own culture— a state of mind, an art-form.

shutterstock_452355661When you go to a BBQ, you know you’re not going to be sticking to that beach-ready body diet you’ve been miserably following all week. It’s the weekend! Those two beautiful days where Sauvignon flows at lunch time and nibbling becomes a national sport.

    The bits on the side.

Make sure you kit the tables out with the basics; nuts, cucumber batons, egg mayo, spring rolls, samosas, battered mushrooms, sausage rolls, pork pies! Then, if you’ve got space; crispy sweet potato fries and cheesy nachos, pasta salads and coleslaw are all strong contenders to add to the grazing table too!

    Get on the sauce

But no BBQ would be complete without an army of condiments ; mayos, mustards, ketchup, BBQ sauces, home-made salsa and guacamole, tangy salad dressings and creamy Hummus. Get ‘on the sauce’ this BBQ season and embrace the benefits of a good Saturday afternoon snacking session!

    shutterstock_520182778

So, give your guests something proper to go with their chicken wings. Long gone are the days when a block of cheddar and a family-sized jar of pickled onions would’ve sufficed. You’re playing with the big [hot]dogs now so make sure you take your spread seriously!

Remember: This isn’t the charity bingo at your local town hall.

    This… Is… BBQ’ing.

    The Main Event

Once upon a time, a British BBQ would typically have involved the cheapest of minced beef burgers and possibly a 60p pack of sausages thrown on to be cremated for an added treat. How times have changed!

So make sure you don’t get a ‘grill’ing from your guests and get creative with what you’re putting between your baps this season!

Get your guests chomping at the ‘spit’.

    shutterstock_596641181

If you have the time, marinating is a good way to go. Toss a few prawns in with some garlic, chilli and a squeeze of lime for a fiery Thai-style starter. Or maybe give your guests a taste of the exotic with some middle-eastern Lamb Kebabs? If you want to keep it simple yet delicious, tin foil a seasoned Sea Bass fillet with a lemon wedge nestled in there for zest or why not go the whole hog and get sizzling some Sirloins?

The world, as they say, is your oven.

    And for the foragers…

BBQ’s are not just about catering for the carnivores anymore. No longer do the vegetarians of the group have to sit in the corner, sadly crunching through blackened bean burgers and bread sticks whilst everybody else gnashes at chicken drumsticks with a Henry VIII - type vigour.

    shutterstock_589129160

Set to overtake Prosecco in terms of trendiness this summer: the dawn of Halloumi. Get those skewers piercing through peppers and courgettes and fire up some ‘squeaky cheese’ for a tasty veggie alternative to chicken! Mushrooms, aubergine, beef tomatoes- with the right herbs and spices, you can finally make your veggie mates’ mouths water because, after all, they deserve to enjoy a BBQ too!

    The final act.

shutterstock_103581095Obviously when it comes to desserts, it’s up to you how you do it. Everyone loves the great British summer classics; Eton Mess, Victoria sponge and, of course, the illustrious tinned fruit trifle. But if you’re looking for scrumptiousness with minimal effort, then BBQ’ing a banana in foil with some chocolate works a treat! Obviously you can improvise with your choice of chocolate- anything from Lindt to a chopped up Crème Egg, and when it’s ready, you’ll have a delicious gooey treat to demolish. A guaranteed crowd pleaser!

It’s messy but it is so worth it.

    Revive your refreshments!

For many connoisseurs of the 'Bar-Be-Cue' realm, the food is the main event but if your drinks station isn’t properly  prepped, you may end up with a small rebellion to mediate. Having a crate strewn in the corner with a couple of bottles of warm pop for the drivers just won’t cut it anymore.

People are a lot harder to impress nowadays. So, don’t fall short of the order and give your guests something to fizz about! In recent years, this retro-quirky-chic style has become immensely popular but can sometimes be pricey to replicate.

278841-mason jar with straw_group on chopping boar_1000x1000Getting some fun glasses, though, can be a cheap way to create a ‘wow’ factor. Drinking your Orange juice out of a cute mason jar with a straw or an old-fashioned style milk bottle would definitely put a smile on your face- even if you are the designated driver. And from 49p a glass, you can plug a cork in your spending.

And if you want to be really impressive, get your hands on a fabulous drinks dispenser for the table. Whether your style is vintage or quirky, a dispenser is an incredibly easy way to tart-up that homemade fruit punch you probably should’ve followed a recipe to make…

Jazz up your drinks and make your guests feel special — it's a party, after all!

Give your garden a spring clean.

Nobody’s expecting a ‘Mrs Bucket’ type approach when it comes to tidying up your garden after the grotty winter months, but there are a few economical and simple ways to inject some life back into your garden.

Firstly, make sure you’ve got enough furniture.

shutterstock_104506379Although most people tend to end up milling around the garden lazily, chatting, nibbling and slurping their Pimms, you want to give your guests the option of a comfy seat. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to get some nice chairs. Outdoor furniture has come on leaps and bounds since those abominable plastic white yard chairs that your Grandma always brought out for garden parties.

Pick up a few panama chairs – they come in loads of bright colours and actually make you want to sit down— not like their predecessors. But if they don’t take your fancy, there are loads to choose from, varying in colour, material and comfort, so you can give your guests a proper place to curl up when the sun sets and everyone’s eaten their fill!

    Twinkle under the stars…

    shutterstock_415274170

And for when the sun goes down, sprinkle some solar onto your garden. With gorgeous fairy lights, hanging bulbs and stake lights from as little as 75p, it’s easy to give your garden a sparkling make-over without blowing your budget!

So, there you have it —

—a guide to not getting a ‘roast’ing this summer by bettering your neighbours’ BBQs and making sure yours is the best BBQ your street has ever seen!

  • Greenfinger's Guide To Growing

    Greenfinger's Guide To Growing

A big hello from the Poundstretcher garden! Allow me to introduce myself. The name’s Greenfinger, Gregory Greenfinger -Poundstretcher’s very own gardening expert, and I’m here to help you with all your gardening needs!

To make things easier, I’ll be running monthly blogs to help you find the best time to plant your favourite flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables - and I’ll even throw in some ideas of how to use them in your kitchen too!

So if you’ve been bitten by the gardening bug and want to get passionate about planting, then take a look at my guide to growing in February!

    planting

    Getting Started

    Small Spaces

Before you start planting any seeds, it’s very important to prepare the ground first. While most seeds can be planted outdoors, it’s key to note that if you’ve not got much room you should sow your seeds in trays or propagators (a small tray with a see through lid) first. That way you’ll give your plants a great head start before you plant them in the ground!

If you need a hand with supplies, I suggest picking up some  propagation sets and some fibre pots, along with one of our fantastic walk in greenhouses from Poundstretcher's great gardening accessories range to get you started!

    getplanting

    Large Spaces

If you’re lucky enough to have a huge garden, then you don’t have to worry about plating your seeds inside first. You do however need to prepare the ground before you start to sow anything – and the first thing you need to think about is weeding!

    weeding

    Weeding

Get rid of any pesky plants that you don’t want growing in your garden, by digging them out by the root. This will ensure that they won’t make a reappearance later down the line, and ruin the appearance of your garden.  Just remember that while people generally use the term “weeds” for plants such as dandelions and nettles, it actually just refers to any plants that you don’t want to see in your garden!

I recommend picking up one of Poundstretcher’s hand trowels or hand forks, along with some trusty gardening gloves to give you a hand with the ground work!

    Soil Improvement

Once you’ve removed all the weeds from your garden, you can then move on to improving your soil. This just means making the texture a little bit easier for the roots to grow in, so it’s easier for them to get to all the nutrients and water in the ground.

The best way to do this is by firstly applying loads of organic compost to the soil. You can either buy a bag of it from any home and gardening store, or you can try making your own from things like shredded paper, vegetable peelings, mowed grass, and even the tops of any weeds you dug up!

After you’ve applied all your compost, you then need to move on to the fertilizer. While compost is typically used to reduce nutrient deficiencies in your plants, fertilizers are used boost the soil’s structure and fertility - so it’s really important to apply both to your soil. Again, you can buy your own fertilizer, or make your own by aging and drying manure for at least 6 months (if you happen to have any lying around) and applying it to your plant beds.

Just remember that if you’re starting your garden from scratch or you’re using clay based soils, it’s best to do all the preparation the winter before you plant your seeds. And don’t think you’re off the hook if you’ve already got plants in your patch, as you’ll need to mulch their beds with some compost and fertiliser before growing season starts up again!

    digging

    Digging

While you only really need to do this if you’re growing fruits or veg, digging is a very important part of ground preparation. Helping to fluff up the soil, digging ensures that plant roots get enough air to aid their growth, allows for easier drainage to stop the roots from drowning, and generally makes it easier for roots break through the soil!

While digging may seem pretty straightforward, old Greenfinger knows different! To get the best results, grab one of our digging spades along with a trusty gardening fork and some left over compost and fertilizer, and dig a straight 10inch trench in the area you want to plant in. Using your fork, dig in roughly 10cm of compost and fertilizer and spread it out across the trench before using your spade to dig another 10inch trench. You can then transfer the soil from the second trench into the first, so that it covers the compost and fertilizer.

You’ll need to repeat these steps until you’ve dug the entire area you want to grow in. But make sure you remember to remove any weeds you see along the way, and break down any clumps of soil you come across while you go!

Once you’ve got all the boring stuff out of the way, you can start thinking about what you want to plant! No matter if you want to start your own allotment, or you’re just fanatical about flowers, I’ll be on hand every month with hints and tips for what to sow! February is the best time to plant:

  • Back To School: The Essential Guide

Back To School: The Essential Guide

August here which means it’s time to start preparing for the back to school season coming up!

Whether you’re sending the kids back to the books or helping the little ones begin their first big step through the school gates, back to school season is super stressful for any parent and child.

So we thought we’d make things a bit easier and help you get them back to school with all their essentials and without tears!

Wake ‘em up before they go go back to school…

School kids running in the playground

Unless your child is an early riser, chances are you’ve all been enjoying sleeping a bit later during the Summer season.

July might have been the time where sitting in your PJs til 11am seemed like a good idea but when you’re preparing your child to be in those school gates by 8.45am, the struggle suddenly gets real.

Start their school bedtime routine early in the month by gradually pushing it back half an hour each week. This way it won’t be such a shock to their (or your) systems when it’s time to rise and shine at the crack of dawn to head back to school.

    Have a speedy lunch schedule…

Decorative sandwich with star and smiley face

Food storage like lunch boxes shouldn’t have to be boring, especially with our ace Disney Princess and Mickey Mouse Lunch Boxes. This is especially true if your little one is just starting school, seeing something familiar like their favourite cartoon character can be comforting as well as a great ice breaker to get them making new friends.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to have a healthy packed lunch that’s also quick! All you need is the usual sandwich ingredients and a bit of creativity! Using cookie cutters to make shapes with sandwiches and their ingredients, putting stickers on their sandwich wrapping, and a little handwritten note will give your child something to smile about – especially if they’re finding going back to school a bit too overwhelming.

It’s a quirky twist on the staple sandwich pack up that takes no time at all and really makes a difference to their day.

    Make their kit magical

  • Get That Summertime Saladness With Mason Jars!

Get That Summertime Saladness With Mason Jars!

British Summertime officially starts on June 21st … and knowing our luck it’ll probably still rain!

So while you’re waiting for the sun, why not do a bit of Summer meal prep?

After all tis the season of the salad and June 16th is the official Fresh Veggies Day!

This lightweight healthy wundermeal is just what we need for a lunchtime pick me up when it feels like we’re roasting like rotisserie chickens.

They’re ridiculously easy to make and with the right ingredients you can have a tasty low calorie meal.

Let’s face it, nobody likes a soggy salad but with the help of our new BFF and favourite 2016 trend: the Mason Jar!

Why should I start using a glass jar for my salad?

Multiple Mason Jar Salads with the fork tied to the glass

Other than a Mason Jar salad looking really cute and colourful, there’s method behind this Mason Jar madness.

An air tight glass container will keep your food fresh by keeping out as much air as possible, while plastic lunch boxes can sometimes make your food taste like… well, plastic!

To get the perfect salad, it’s all about how you layer your ingredients in your jar.

The ingredient at the bottom of the jar, layer 1, is always your dressing. When you tip your salad in a bowl or on a plate, the dressing will cover the top without being soaked up.

Layer 2 is something a bit chunkier that will stop the dressing splashing your leaves while layer 3 is usually the stuff you want to stay dry until it hits your plate. Usually it’s your crunch like croutons, nuts, or seeds but can also be a thicker ingredient too.

Your leafy greens are always your final layer to create the salad bed when you tip the jar upside down to make it all fall on the plate.

You can have as many layers as you like for a Mason Jar salad, as long as your first and second layers follow this formula you can mix and match your other layers.

    The Beetroot Blaster

A bowl of tasty carrot and beetroot salad

Eat a rainbow for lunch with this blast of bright colours and sweet succulent flavours! Not only will your colleagues marvel at your desk dining art but your kids will love your glowing gourmet lunch too, so a this Mason Jar salad is a great way to get them eating healthy.

Layer 1: A light balsamic vinaigrette will bring out the sweetness of those beets!

Layer 2: Beetroot will make this sweet salad appear radioactive when tipped on a plate!

Layer 3: Bacon bits – we hate to go bacon your heart (get it?!) carnivores, but these little crouton chums are vegetarian yet still full of deliciousness!

Layer 4: A little grated carrot can hydrate your salad and stop it from being too sweet. Plus the purple and orange look really pretty together!

Layer 5: Mixed lettuce leaves for a crunchy blend of flavours for your salad bed.

    The Edgy Veggie

    A bowl of broccoli

Technically this isn’t a salad but we’re throwing it in here for an honorary mention! As well as keeping soggy salads at bay, your jar will also stop your veggies from turning to mush so you can tip them on the plate ready to reheat. If you're feeling cheeky, drizzle with a bit of gravy after you've reheated your roast! So if you have any leftovers from your Sunday roast this is perfect for making the start of the week Monday Funday!

Layer 1: Roast potatoes or parsnips to soak up that gravy goodness on top!

Layer 2: A little bit of chunky cauliflower will soak up any bits of gravy your spuds have missed.

Layer 4: Leftovers like carrots add more moisture to your mix and a subtle sweetness to this vegetable powerhouse!

Layer 5: Tender broccoli will give you protein, iron, and a slice of Sunday lunch while you work.

    The Protein Packer

Jars filled with colourful pulses like lentils, chickpeas and more!

Breaking a sweat at the gym for those cheese grater abs? Then you need the protein packer salad! Filled with protein and fibre rich ingredients like chickpeas, seeds, and nuts, you’ll be energised ready to pump iron at the gym after work!

    The Vampire Slayer

Chopped red onions in the shape of a heart

This is the salad you should eat if your colleagues have no sense of smell and romance is off the cards for the evening! Full of our favourite pongy veg like spring onions, red onion with a chilli kick of jalapenos, it’s a tasty and tangy treat!

Layer 1: Sour cream and chive or cottage cheese will cool down any heat. If that’s not your bag then a little garlic mayo will do the trick too!

Layer 2: Sliced Bombay potatoes for a classier version of cheesy chips.

Layer 3: Red onion and spring onion thinly sliced and mixed.

Layer 4: Jalapeños if you dare to spice it up!

Layer 5: A layer of cooked kale seasoned with ground garlic for extra flavour!
